Cowboy is a black and white World Champion Overo.
When Judy Ford asked
me to buy him, I was amazed. He was universally regarded
as the best black and white stallion in the USA.
|
Judy needed to sell him, but it was breaking her heart. She knew that his future with many studs would be bleak. SO she rang me and said in effect: "No-one but you". My crazy ramblings about how I put horse welfare first and trophies second had really moved her. A horse person that really cares about horses like herself she said.
I jumped at the chance to own this muscle-bound, swan-necked black and white with the huge jowls. His enormous jaw leads to the prettiest tiny mouth. Like all of his relatives, he has a lovely nature - a genuinely nice horse.
And he has sound legs and feet. Sits out in the paddock all the time, usually with no rug, and remains in show condition. Even his black colour doesn't sun bleach. And he loves a carrot.
|
So I thought, there must be something about this horse that needs improving. He is heart-stoppingly beautiful in the flesh, but is his pedigree up to speed?
He is out of Hotrodders Jet Set mare - so he should produce both halter and ridden progeny.
He has one cross to Mr. Sonny Money and two to Impressive in his pedigree (he is HYPP N/N by the way).
So far so good.
Then I thought, he really is shaping up to be a great producer of ridden babies. I wonder what his pedigree will show under closer examination. And this is where the story gets really interesting. The modern western horse (Quarter Horses, Paints and Appaloosas) is largely influenced by one stallion. DO you know his name? This stallion was line-bred to in order to produce the following stallions: Ima Cool Skip, Coolest, Kid Clu, Kids Classic Style, Mr Conclusion, Mr Yella Fella, Noble Tradition, Obvious Conclusion, Te N Te, Perpetration, Statutory, Touchdown Kid and even the legendary Impressive (and most other great stallions). |
His name is Three Bars and he was a Thoroughbred. Shaped the modern western horse he did. Most outstanding modern western horses have several crosses to Three Bars in their pedigree. You see, this glorious old Thoroughbred, born in 1940 and measuring 15.3 hands, produced many great quarter mile racing Quarter Horses. Those that failed on the race track were so pretty that they were grabbed by the halter horse people to upgrade the looks of their dumpy old fashioned mares. Two classic failed racers were Impressive and Te N Te. Impressive was 75% Thoroughbred (with three crosses to Three Bars) and Te N Te was 66% Thoroughbred (with one cross to Three Bars).

|
The great halter horse breeder from the USA, Jerry Wells, told me that he was there "on the day Te N Te came off the track". He was blown away by this big scopey horse. So Three Bars was the overwhelming foundation for the modern western horse. Ford Shameless Cowboy has sixteen crosses to Three Bars in his pedigree. Overall he is about 25% Three Bars blood. This form of line-breeding, with constant outcrosses and selection for better type, is the ultimate in good breeding.
|
So, we crossed Cowboy to Dance Society, a Thoroughbred mare we own. Did you look at the picture? The baby is really lovely and we are deliberately holding her weight down (we believe in growing our babies slowly - this is best for their welfare). You don't expect to produce such a super baby from a Thoroughbred do you? You do if you breed from Ford Shameless Cowboy. Believe it or not, Dance Society is related to the Quarter Horse Stallion, Te N Te. Both of these horses descend from the Thoroughbred stallion, Nasrullah. Pays to check the pedigree doesn't it? It tells you which matings work and which don't. Remember that Te N Te also descends from Three Bars - so we know that the cross works. |

This exquisite filly is the produce of
the mating of Ford Shameless
Cowboy to the Thoroughbred mare, Dance Society.

BELOW: Impressive

|
As you might guess, we are pretty chuffed with Cowboy. We also own his sister FF Shesebonyandivory (imp) and his half-sister, Ford Shameless Leaguer (imp), both black and whites.
We are hoping to colour the world black and white. |
