DON BURKE'S STORY ...

Photo: Shane Rux
I could never forget the day that I found First Down. We had been looking around the USA for about five years for a paint stallion, but we really didn't see anything that we liked. Then we popped into Lyn Simon's place and I saw a stunning paint stallion under a rug in a stable. Is it for sale? Yes, he said. Can you get him out for me? Sure. As Lyn took the rug off First Down my legs nearly went from under me. I never thought that it was possible to breed a paint stallion this good. First Down was clearly generations ahead of any paint that I had ever seen: he had a huge amount of muscle, a strong back, great hocks, a stunning neck, a dolly head and more presence than I had ever seen in a quarter horse or paint.

As if this wasn't enough, he was NN for HYPP and was a sabino (ie negative for the lethal white syndrome). He can never produce a lethal white foal to any mare. His sire is Touchdown Kid and his mother is one of the great paint brood and show mares, Versas Spicey Star.

We purchased First Down and entered him in the World Paint Congress. He won Grand Champion Paint Stallion. He went on to win World Champion Two Year Old stallion at the APHA World Show the following year. It is very rare to find a horse that is equally as strong in its father's line as it is in its mother's. First Down's mother, Versas Spicey Star, is every bit as good a dam as Touchdown Kid is a sire. We purchased her too and have some great siblings and half siblings to First Down growing up in the USA.

First Down is now in Australia but is widely regarded in the USA as the best paint stallion ever bred. He has matured at over 16.3HH and has a gloriously gentle disposition. His first foal crop has been born in Australia and he produced 75% registrable paint foals and 25% solids. All of his foals are a "type". That is, he produces foals that are of very high quality and remarkably similar to each other. When we mated him to a very old-fashioned mare, he still produced an ultra-modern colt that would be competitive at shows anywhere in the world. He clearly classifies as a prepotent sire.

We are currently about to place First Down in Quarantine to collect semen to freeze and export to the USA and Canada. His semen freezes well and we already have one mare in foal from one insemination with thawed semen from him. One hundred percent so far......
